The Summer Solstice arrives every year between June 20 and June 22 in the Northern Hemisphere.
In modern times the Summer Solstice is known as Midsummer and celebrated as the longest day of the year and the official start of summer. In ancient times traditions associated with this solar anniversary would have included bonfires to aid the power of the sun while driving away evil spirits. Festivals would commemorate this annual longest day and shortest night of the year.
Due to the belief that the connection between the physical world and the spirit realm was very tangible gemstones would often be carried as talismans for good fortune and protection.
As in past times, many people today believe in the metaphysical powers of gemstones and have written extensively about gemstones that are the best to wear during the Solstice and the summer months.
Some of the more popular gemstones would include anything in the red, orange and yellow range to mimic the sun such as Amber, Carnelian, Red Jasper and Sunstone. Other stones worn to keep away spirits and mischievous fairies included Rose Quartz, Blue Topaz, Citrine, and Labradorite. Of course we believe that gemstones are always best set into sterling silver jewellery but we'll leave that to you!
Known as the stone of unconditional love and inner peace, rose quartz helps with the empowerment of one’s self and positive thoughts, choices, and expression.
Blue Topaz is said to draw its solar influence from the entire sky, inspiring strength and vitality. In metaphysical circles Blue Topaz is a stone of peacefulness, calming to the emotions and ideal for meditation and connecting with spiritual beings.
Citrine, a stone associated with the sun, is also said to have the ability to attract abundance of all kinds. And because of its beautiful shades of yellow it is like carrying around your own little ray of light and positivity.
Labradorite is said to be a power stone in determining your dreams and setting goals. Some believe it helps to spark the imagination and raise your level of creativity. Labradorite in metaphysical circles is said to be a stone of protection. Perfect for protecting oneself from bothersome fairies on the longest day of the year.
